How does Bravecto kill fleas and ticks?

After you give your dog a Bravecto chewable tablet, the active fluralaner is absorbed from the gut into the bloodstream and quickly reaches tissue fluids just under your dog's skin.

When you apply Bravecto spot-on to your pet, the active fluralaner is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream and quickly reaches tissue fluids just under your pet’s skin.

The moment fleas and ticks attach to start feeding, they ingest small concentrations of fluralaner. Exposure to fluralaner affects the nervous system of fleas and ticks, killing them quickly.

Bravecto kills fleas, prevents flea infestations and kills the endemic New Zealand tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis) for the full treatment period. Bravecto chewable tablets are also approved for the treatment and control of generalised demodicosis (mange caused by Demodex species mites).

Remember the treatment periods are:

  • Bravecto chew for dogs – 3 months flea and tick protection
  • Bravecto spot-on for cats – 3 months flea and tick protection.

My pet is on medication for another condition right now. Is it safe to give her Bravecto?

It is always best to discuss all of your pet's treatments, whether prescription or over-the-counter medicines, with your veterinarian as they are your pet's health care expert. Studies5 with Bravecto have shown no interactions with routinely used veterinary medicinal products.

How palatable are Bravecto chewable tablets, and should they be given with food?

Bravecto chewable tablets can be given to your dog any time of the day at or around the time of feeding

In a US field study6 where dogs were offered Bravecto chewable tablets at home, over 92% of dogs ate the tablet voluntarily—either by itself or with food.

My dog is allergic to some food, what protein is in Bravecto chewable tablets?

Bravecto chewable tablets are made with a hydrolysed pork protein so they are suitable for most dogs. Check with your veterinarian before use if your dog has a food allergy.

My dog weighs over 56 kgs – how do I treat him?

Use the appropriate combination of two Bravecto chews to best fit your dog’s weight.

Can I use Bravecto spot-on solution to treat my kitten for fleas?

Bravecto spot-on solution is safe for flea treatment in cats from 11 weeks of age and over 1.2kg.

My cat is quite wriggly, where exactly should I apply Bravecto spot-on?

Part the hair and apply to the skin on the back of the head, as per the diagram. As cats are fastidious groomers, applying to this location is important to prevent your cat from licking the wet application site. To make application easier, have your cat standing during application. It may be helpful to have someone else gently hold your cat or lying on its stomach while you apply Bravecto spot-on.

Cat spot on indications

My cat has licked the wet Bravecto spot-on application site, what should I do?

If licking occurs shortly after application, your cat may salivate excessively or vomit due to the unpleasant taste of the formulation. Keep them inside and monitor, usually these signs are short-lived but contact your veterinarian if you are concerned. Always apply to the back of the head to prevent licking.

I’ve just given my pet Bravecto. How long until my pet’s fleas are gone?

Bravecto chewable tablets start killing fleas within 2 hours and will have killed all fleas on your dog within 8 hours2. >99% of new fleas that jump onto your dog will be killed for the next 3 months2,5.

Be aware that if there are adult fleas on your pet, there are many more flea eggs, larvae and pupae in your pet’s immediate environment – e.g. your carpet, pet bedding, furniture, and between floorboards in your home.

Adult fleas on your pet are around 5% of your total flea population. So if your pet has 5 adult fleas, there are 95 more fleas developing in your home! Over a period of around 3 months, these 95 immature fleas will develop into adults and jump onto your pet. Bravecto provides long-lasting protection to ensure the whole flea population is killed over time.

What else can I do to quickly get rid of fleas in my home?

  • Treat all the pets in your home with Bravecto, at the recommended treatment intervals (year-round). Remember that cats with fleas often groom more rather than scratching like dogs do, so you may not notice that your cat has fleas.
  • Wash pets’ bedding in a hot-wash cycle to kill immature fleas.
  • Regularly vacuum carpets and upholstery to pick up eggs and immature fleas in the environment.
  • In severe infestations, an environmental treatment such as a ‘flea-bomb’ for your home may be helpful to reduce the immature flea population quickly.
