The NZ Cattle Tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis) is endemic in New Zealand, and is commonly found in warmer regions. This tick will attach to and feed from a variety of domestic animals including cattle, sheep, deer, dogs, cats, and horses, as well as the occasional human, wildlife and bird species.

Worms

Tapeworms, or cestodes, are long flat worms with a ribbon-like body comprised of many repeating segments, usually found in the small intestine of the host. Tapeworm infestations usually do not cause clinical signs, however egg packets (proglottids) may be visible in the faeces or around the animal’s anus. Species, such as Dipylidium caninum can infest children.

Dipylidium caninum affects dogs, with part of its life cycle occurring inside a flea. Reinfection of the dog is by ingestion of fleas containing tapeworm larvae (cysticercoids). Good flea control with Bravecto Chew or Bravecto Spot-on for Dogs can prevent infestation with the flea tapeworm.
